Behind the Blueprint
Oversized bearings for Detroit DD15 engines… what’s the reason? Vince Barbarie, IPD’s Senior Director of Engineering, breaks down how IPD’s design makes repairs easier. When a crankshaft gets worn, you often have to bring it to a machine shop and cut 50 thousandths off that crankshaft. That’s when an oversized bearing comes in. But there are tricks with an oversized bearing. The manufacturer has a choice: either make the alloy layer thicker, which is a cheaper alternative. Or you can make the steel backing thicker and keep the alloy layer the same, which is what IPD chooses to do.
