The pace of new engine technology can be difficult to keep up with. Whether you are rebuilding or ordering parts for a newer engine, the terms that have been developed can be confusing. This month, we have put together a quick reference of terms that you may need to know when dealing with these engines.
 
In addition, this month’s Featured Product addresses an older application engine that can benefit from the newer technology of piston crown-gallery cooling.

IPD Featured Product
IPD announces the release of 1601131 gallery cooled piston for Caterpillar® 3406 / 3408 / 3412 engines.


This piston can be used to replace the 9Y4004 in select applications where piston seizure may be caused by high horsepower and/or temperature conditions. The oil cooling gallery, built in the crown of the piston, helps to reduce operating temperature of the piston and the risk of quarter point scuffing or seizures that are common in overheating conditions. 
 
When updating a 3406 from a 9Y4004 piston to the 1601131 piston, the cooling jets must be changed from a single configuration to a dual configuration. Jet numbers 1663650 (with .3228" bolt") or the 1979336 (with .4016" bolt) dual cooling jets replace the 7W4990 single cooling jet. The oil pump must also be updated from the 0R9448 to the 0R9449 engine oil pump group. Oversize connecting rod “top end” bushing for 300 series Caterpillar® engines now available exclusively from IPD!


IPD part number 8N2275-005 is now available at a .005” (.127mm) oversize to help salvage connecting rods for D & G 353 / 379 / 398 / 399 engines where the bushing bore (top end) requires additional machining to return to a true round bore.

New oversize pistons for 3116 engines released
 

IPD recently released 2 new pistons for various 3116 machine applications that were previously only available in standard size.  These pistons are now both available as .50mm (.020”) oversized to reduce costly sleeving operations.
